Clemson University: English test requirements

Clemson publishes one short undergraduate table (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or U.S. English composition) and a separate university-wide graduate table that also accepts PTE and TOEFL Essentials. Graduate programmes may set higher scores, and student-facing assistantships can require more.

Checked on 2 Nov 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

Undergraduate

One table for all international undergraduate applicants. English Composition I and II from an accredited U.S. college or university with a grade of B or better also counts. The test can be waived where English is the primary language or one of the official languages. The page gives TOEFL only on the 0-120 scale.

“English proficiency is measured through Duolingo, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).”

Undergraduate admissions: international students

Graduate

University minimums; each programme sets its own requirements, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. Scores are valid for two years from the test date and must come straight from the testing agency. A degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or from a foreign institution where English is the sole language of instruction (checked against the IAU WHED database), meets the requirement. Some programmes offer conditional language admission after an approved ESL programme, such as ELS level 112. Student-facing assistantships may need higher scores or a screening.

Admissions tests

SAT / ACT · First-year applicants

Optional

Applicants choose whether SAT or ACT scores are considered and can switch that preference up to the materials deadline. Clemson superscores both tests and accepts only official scores sent by the testing agency.

“Applicants are not required to submit a standardized test score to be considered for admission to Clemson.”

GMAT / GRE · Clemson MBA programmes, including the full-time MBA Corporate

Optional

The application resources page covers all Clemson MBA applications; scores may be self-reported. The same page says international MBA applicants need TOEFL, Duolingo or ELS level 112, without giving scores.

“GMAT scores are optional for all MBA applications.”

Other tests the university lists

  • English Composition I and II from an accredited U.S. college or university, grade B or better (undergraduate)
  • TOEFL Essentials (graduate)
  • ELS level 112 or AELI level 6 for conditional language admission to specific graduate programmes

“Not on the list” means the test does not appear on the university page we checked. It does not mean the test is refused: the course page or the admissions office may still accept it, so ask them.
