Simon Fraser University: English test requirements

Undergraduate and graduate applicants each meet one university-wide set of test minimums. For graduate study, programmes may set higher minimums, so the programme page must also be checked. Tests must be taken in a single sitting, and several shortcuts replace a test (such as three years of English-medium secondary school with 70% in senior English).

Checked on 31 Oct 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

Applicants can meet the requirement by schooling or exam grades (for example the last three years of secondary school in English with 70% in senior English), or by a test taken within the last 24 months. Competence is required in all four skills. The page says the first-year writing-intensive courses need higher grades than admission. TOEFL is given for tests from 21 January 2026 and for earlier tests; institution code is not stated on the undergraduate page. Exempt countries: Nigeria is on the page's list of countries where the last three years of full-time English-medium secondary school satisfy the requirement; India and Pakistan are not on that list.

Graduate

University minimums. Some graduate programmes have higher requirements, and if so the programme's level applies. Test scores are valid for two years and must be achieved in a single test. Applicants with a bachelor's degree or higher from an English-medium institution in a country where English is the primary language need no test. The TOEFL institution code is 0999. Exempt countries: the page has a list of countries from which no English test is required; Nigeria is on it and India and Pakistan are not. For India, the page notes that the British Council can send IELTS results electronically to the university.

Graduate Studies: English language requirements

The page says these are not accepted

  • IELTS One Skill Retake (undergraduate)
  • TOEFL MyBest scores
  • TOEFL Essentials
  • IELTS General Training (graduate)

“Not on the list” means the test does not appear on the university page we checked. It does not mean the test is refused: the course page or the admissions office may still accept it, so ask them.
