University of Hertfordshire: English test requirements

Hertfordshire publishes one standard set of scores (lower for undergraduate, higher for postgraduate) and a list of named courses that need a higher IELTS (6.5, 7.0 or 7.5). It accepts Duolingo for the standard set. Some courses accept IELTS only, and the course page and offer are the final word.

Checked on 31 Oct 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

Undergraduate

Most courses use the standard set (IELTS 6.0, no band below 5.5). The page then lists courses that need IELTS 6.5 or 7.0, with minimum band scores also applying; for those higher tiers it gives only the IELTS figure, except that the TOEFL, Duolingo and PTE figures it labels as equivalents of IELTS 6.5 or gives for both levels are shown for the 6.5 tier. Cambridge and LanguageCert figures are not shown for the 6.5 tier because the page gives them only per level (undergraduate or postgraduate), not per tier. IELTS, PTE and TOEFL results are valid for two years and must be valid on the date the CAS is issued.
