University of Manchester: English test requirements
Manchester publishes one page of accepted tests for all degree levels, but the actual scores sit on each course profile, so you must open your own course. The page does give a table of typical scores (IELTS 5.5 to 7.5 and above), but no named bands, so a few real course pages are shown as examples.
Checked on 31 Oct 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

The university states that scores vary by course and that sub-skill minimums may also apply, so check the course profile. As a rough guide the page lists typical overall scores: IELTS from 5.5 to 7.5 or more; TOEFL iBT 72, 80, 90, 100 or 109-120 (1-6 scale: 4, 4.5, 4.5, 5 or 5.5); PTE Academic from 59-63 up to 79 or more. Tests are valid for two years and must still be valid on the first day of Welcome Week. Below-degree courses (foundation, pre-sessional) accept only UKVI-approved secure tests taken in person.
The scores for this level are set course by course. The tests below are the ones the university lists; check the exact scores on your course page (course finder).
