University of Melbourne: English test requirements

Every course is placed in a University English level (1, 1a, 1b, 2, 2a, 2b or 3) and the course page says which. Most undergraduate degrees sit at Level 1, but some courses, especially graduate ones, need a higher level or their own scores.

Checked on 31 Oct 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

One table of English levels (1, 1a, 1b, 2, 2a, 2b, 3) is used for undergraduate and graduate courses; the course page states the level or its own scores, and some courses differ from the table because of professional accreditation (for example the Master of Teaching and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine pages give their own mixes). Tests must be sat at a test centre in one sitting within 24 months of starting, and online or at-home versions are not accepted. The score must come from a single test report.

Other tests the university lists

  • IELTS One Skill Retake (within 60 days of the full test)
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced
  • LanguageCert Academic
  • Michigan English Test

The page says these are not accepted

  • Online or at-home versions of any approved test
  • Scores combined from more than one test
  • Tests sat outside the applicant's country of citizenship, last education or residence or employment (limited bordering-country exceptions)

“Not on the list” means the test does not appear on the university page we checked. It does not mean the test is refused: the course page or the admissions office may still accept it, so ask them.
