University of Sydney: English test requirements
The University of Sydney states its standard requirement in IELTS (6.5 overall, no band below 6.0) and converts it to other tests through a published concordance table, but every course page sets its own score, from IELTS 6.0 up to 7.5. Only the 'TOEFL for Australia' version of TOEFL is accepted.
Checked on 31 Oct 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

Other tests the university lists
- IELTS One Skill Retake (validity counted from the original IELTS Academic date)
- Cambridge C1 Advanced
- Cambridge C2 Proficiency
- LanguageCert Academic (in person)
The page says these are not accepted
- IELTS Online
- TOEFL iBT Home Edition (only the TOEFL Australia version is accepted)
- Non-academic tests (IELTS, PTE and LanguageCert must be the academic test)
“Not on the list” means the test does not appear on the university page we checked. It does not mean the test is refused: the course page or the admissions office may still accept it, so ask them.
