Newcastle University: English test requirements

Newcastle does not publish bands. It states a typical requirement (IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each skill) and says each undergraduate and postgraduate course page may ask for more, so the course entry requirements are what count. Duolingo and PTE are accepted, with typical scores set out on the international English page.

Checked on 31 Oct 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

Undergraduate

Typical requirement on the university page: IELTS (Academic or UKVI) 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Individual course pages list higher overall or sub-scores where needed; for example the page for the accelerated Medicine and Surgery MB BS asks for IELTS 7.5 with 7.0 in each of the four elements. Tests are valid if taken within three years of the course start. IELTS One Skill Retakes are accepted from 2025 entry.

The scores for this level are set course by course. The tests below are the ones the university lists; check the exact scores on your course page (course finder).
