University of Greenwich: English test requirements

Greenwich sets its IELTS requirement by degree type (BA, BSc and BEng 6.0; MA, MSc, MBA and LLM 6.5) with a list of exceptions, then gives an equivalence table that maps TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo to the IELTS 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0 levels. Scores for the other tests are set against the overall IELTS level only, so a course with a higher IELTS sub-score does not change them. TOEFL and PTE must be taken in person.

Checked on 31 Oct 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

Applicants from India

The Standard XII English waiver (65 percent) cannot be used by applicants from four states. The page says: “This waiver is not applicable to applicants from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh or Uttarakhand.”

Applicants from Pakistan, India and Nigeria

Pre-sessional English is open only to applicants with a UKVI IELTS test, so a non-UKVI result cannot be used to join it. The page says: “Pre-sessional English programmes are only available to students that have completed a UKVI IELTS.”

Applicants from Nigeria

WAEC or NECO English at grade C6 or above can exempt a Nigerian applicant from IELTS. The page says: “Nigerian SSCE (WAEC/NECO) English C6 or above can exempt you from IELTS”
