St Andrews gives each faculty (undergraduate) or subject (postgraduate) a named language profile such as 3-D or 7-D, and each profile page lists scores for each test. Most applicants educated in English do not need a test.

Each faculty has a named profile. A test is normally not needed if you studied in English at school or come from a majority English-speaking country. Test scores must normally be within two years of the programme start. The School of English, Medicine and Science have their own profiles.

Each subject is placed in a named profile (1-D, 3-D, 4-D, 5-D, 6-D or 7-D) listed on the page. Profile 7-D is the lowest, 1-D the highest. Test scores must normally be within two years of the programme start. Degrees taught in English may avoid the test; for Pakistan, India and Nigeria a verified ECCTIS C1 statement is needed.

Profile 7-D is the minimum for any research student; Schools normally ask for the same scores as for their taught programmes and may ask for more. Geography and Sustainable Development research degrees use Profile 6-D.
