Ball State University: English test requirements

Ball State uses one set of English proficiency scores for all applicants educated outside the US, without separating undergraduate and graduate study, with an Academic Bridge Program and conditional admission through its Intensive English Institute for lower scores. Old-scale TOEFL scores are accepted through December 2027.

Checked on 2 Nov 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

All international applicants

Required of all applicants with education outside the US unless a waiver applies, whatever their immigration status. Scores are valid for 24 months. Programmes and departments may set different requirements. Waivers cover set US study, a diploma, degree or 24 credit hours from an accredited institution in a listed country, individually reviewed English-medium study elsewhere (a medium of instruction letter alone is not enough), or a year of qualifying professional work. Applicants slightly below the minimums may enter the Academic Bridge Program (for example Duolingo 100 or 105, TOEFL 4.0, IELTS 6.0, PTE 51-52), and lower scores may lead to conditional admission through the Intensive English Institute.

Other tests the university lists

  • SAT Critical Reading / EBRW 500
  • ACT English 21
  • Academic Bridge Program
  • Intensive English Institute (conditional admission)

The page says these are not accepted

  • Medium of Instruction letter alone

“Not on the list” means the test does not appear on the university page we checked. It does not mean the test is refused: the course page or the admissions office may still accept it, so ask them.
