University of Maryland, College Park: English test requirements

Undergraduates face a single passing score per test (IELTS 7, TOEFL 5 or 95, Duolingo 120). Graduate admission has a full-enrolment tier plus conditional routes that add an English course at the Maryland English Institute; these conditional ranges are shown separately and are not admission minimums for full enrolment. PTE is accepted for graduate entry only, and Duolingo for undergraduate entry only.

Checked on 31 Oct 2026 against the university's own pages. Universities change their requirements, and some courses ask for more. Always confirm on the university's page before you book a test or apply.

The page prints a UMD passing score for each test. It also prints lower Maryland English Institute score ranges, but does not say how they affect admission, so they are not recorded here. Scores must be under two years old and sent by the testing agency (UMD code 5814). Waivers can apply, for example four years at a US high school without ESL classes or a US-accredited degree. TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted.

Graduate

General Graduate School minimums; programmes may hold applicants to stricter scores, including only considering full-enrolment scores. A score in the conditional range can lead to admission with an English condition. TOEFL is printed on two scales: tests taken on or before 20 January 2026 (0-120) and tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 (1-6). The page says Intensive English is not offered for Spring 2027. The Graduate School accepts TOEFL MyBest and the highest section scores across IELTS or PTE reports of the same test type.
